Case Studies

Scotplay has designed and installed play areas all over Scotland for Schools and Nurseries. You can use our interactive map to see our successful projects In Your Area.  Below are some of our favourites examples:

Elba Lane Nursery, Glasgow

The staff at Elba Lane Nursery were desperate to make changes to their playground as all they had was a tarmac surface with no outdoor play equipment.  The nursery is in an urban location, with a lot of the children living in flats and not having access to outdoor space, the staff recognised the importance of providing the children with a fun and challenging play space where they could learn how to live active lifestyles while expressing their imaginations.  Additionally the nursery was experiencing a high number of accidents from children falling on the tarmac.

Our playground consultant met with the staff from the nursery and designed a playground to meet their needs, we also helped the nursery to apply for funding.  The design incorporated all of these needs.  Wetpour Safety Surfacing has been installed onto the full playground, this includes a cycling track for the children to have fun on their bikes while also learning basic road safety skills.  The Limes Multi-Play Unit and slide allows the children to develop their risk taking, co-ordination and balancing skills.  The pirate ship allows the children to expand their imaginations.  The L-shaped Seating Planter teaches the children about their natural environment giving them the skills to plant flowers and vegetables.

Ancrum Primary, Scottish Borders

Ancrum Primary is a village school with a small school roll of 20-30 pupils.  The school wanted to develop their playground but didn’t know how they were going to pay for it, our playground consultant gave them advice on where to get funding and also guided them through the process.  The playground has open access so the equipment can now be used by everyone in the community, not just the children that attend the school.

The challenge of the project was providing the children with an exciting active experience in a playground with limited space.  We designed a multi-level unit that was 1.2m high increasing the difficulty and making the experience enjoyable for different age groups.  We also included a Mini-Beast Exploration Table, increasing the opportunities for outdoor learning and teaching the children about insect and plant life.  The introduction of bike racks is simple way of promoting active lifestyles and encouraging children to cycle to school rather than coming by car.

St Bridget’s Primary, North Ayrshire

The staff at St Bridget’s Primary contacted Scotplay as we were recommended to them by a previous customer.  They had recently carried out a survey with their pupils and their parents asking them how they would like to improve their school.  The overwhelming response was to develop the school grounds providing the children with a fun, active and educational play area.   The staff and community had managed to raise a considerable amount of money themselves but needed some help in gaining the rest of the funding.  Our sales consultant was more than happy to help and within 3 months the school had all the money they required to complete their project.

St Bridget’s now have a large activity trail, including climbing, balancing, jumping, crawling, swinging and arm strength.  They also have a solar powered stop clock allowing the children to time themselves or race each other, increasing the challenge and enjoyment.  The school also got Musical Play Panels, allowing the children to learn new skills and express their creativity.
